Name: Matthew Wyatt
Date of Birth: 07/10/1990
Club: North Harbour Bays
Discipline: Long Jump
What are your main achievements in Athletics?
2 x New Zealand Long Jump Champion (2013-7.53m, 2014-7.65m)
What are the main challenges of the season?
Coming off the back of two injury stricken seasons full of torn muscles and stress fractures, the major challenge for myself and coach Elena Brown was to remain injury free. This was important for my progression into bigger performances, as prior to the 2013/14 season I had only completed five outings in my short Long Jump career. Doubling this number and some has allowed me to continue a string of PBs not only in the pits but also my 100m sprint time on the track. Developing an in-competition mental ability is as important as developing a physical ability, if you can’t bring out the big performance on the day you may as well not have it.
What are your future goals (short and long term)?
I have two goals:
- Break the New Zealand record within the next 12 months.
- Qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics at a level capable of reaching the top 8.
What is your favourite food pre-competition?
Pre-comp dinner as standard is one roast chicken, one packet of rice and one bag of lettuce. Simple- yes, quick and effective- also yes.
Do you have any training advice?
It’s not how hard you train but how smart you train.
One thing I have learnt from my string of injuries is its better to skip the last rep than risk not being 100% at your next competition. I believe everything you do in training should prepare you to feel great on competition day- if I feel at my best; I’ll compete at my best.
