Preview – New to the Auckland Centre this season is the grade 12-13yr Challenge Day competition. This season the competition will be held at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton and will also involve two teams from the Waikato & Bay of Plenty centre.
The Auckland Centre Challenge Day teams are created from the two cluster groups we have operating in the Auckland centre, CNW and Counties Manukau.
The competition is based on a similar format used for the grade 10-11yr Challenge day in that the competition will start mid-morning and go through the day. At the completion of the competition there will be dinner for the athletes as well as a prize giving were the individual and team awards are presented to the athletes and teams.
The points for the competition are based on the 5 Star athletics scoring charts. All athletes receive a certificate at prize giving with their total points across their individual events determining which level of certificate they achieve.
The team awards are a based on a combined total of the individual awards for each team.
Who is this event for – This event is for any registered Grade 12/ 13yr athletes in the Auckland Centre. Note – the junior rules apply in that this event is for athletes who are aged 12/13yr on Dec 31st 2024.
Date of competition – Saturday 1st March 2025
Venue -Porritt Stadium, Hamilton.
Events – Individual – 60m, 100m, 300m, 1500m, 200m hurdles, sprint hurdles, 1200m RW, Shot-put, Discus, Long Jump, High Jump and triple jump (to be confirmed) Relays – 4x100m, 1000m sprint medley.
The athletes will be able to enter 3 individual events. This can either be 2 track and 1 field event or 2 field events and 1 track event. Athletes will also be involved in 1 relay team.
Event Cost – TBA (awaiting the costs of the team buses)
Team selection/training days – The teams will have a selection process and forms available for the athletes to complete and submit. Athletes will need to enter personnel best’s (PB) for each of their individual events on the entry forms. These Pb’s can come from events such as the Colgate Games, Counties Manukau Junior Championship, Auckland Junior Championship, McKinnon Shield events or club nights. These events can be from last season or this season and can include secondary school results.
Note – the results are for event selection.
Athletes will need to be competing in athletic events during the season to help with their selection which will be before the Xmas holidays i.e. ribbon days, relay days or McKinnon Shield events.
There will be training days across November and December to assist the athletes in preparing for the event before the team selection. There will also be training days during and after the Xmas holidays and before the competition day. Notification of these training days are generally by email or Facebook posts.
Registration cut-off date is January 17th. For more information or for a team form you can contact each cluster group at –
CNW team contact – Rachel at rach.keereweer@gmail.com
Counties Manukau team contact – Terry at countiesmanukauathletics@gmail.com.

Auckland Region Boasts Three Teams for North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Champs
As the term 1 summer sports start to wrap up at secondary schools, the finale event for the term 1 summer season is the much anticipated North Island Secondary School Championships. This year to be held at the ever-popular Porritt Stadium, in Hamilton – a relatively easy commute for our Auckland families.
The Auckland region boasts 3 teams for the NISS event. North Harbour, Auckland, and Counties Manukau. With a large number of athletes coming out of the Auckland region, having the 3 teams compete ensures more of our incredibly talented athletes have the opportunity to represent their school at a regional level.
The event will be held on the weekend of Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 of April.
