James Trathen came within half a second of breaking the New Zealand under 20 800m record with an outstanding solo performance of 1:48.39. The 19 year old was straight out of the blocks and tearing around the first lap well clear of the rest of the field. He held on strong over the final 80 metres to come within a whisker of James Harding’s 2022 record of 1:47.96.
His previous best 800m was 1:51.76 at the Porritt Classic in February. Over the past two weeks Trathen has also set personal bests of 48.48 over 400m and 3:54.41 in the 1500m.
His younger brother Richie won the 3000m race walk earlier in the programme.
Rafe Couillault provided the highlight in the field events with a career best high jump of 2.08m. This added two centimetres to his jump of 2.06m in Hawera nearly three years ago.
National women’s 400m champion in 2021 Camryn Smart took out the women’s sprint double in 12.36 over 100m and 25.44 over 200m.
Eden Moyle followed up a dead heat with Smart in the 100m and second in the 200m with an Auckland under 16 record of 5.75m in the long jump. Her time of 12.36 in the 100m was a PB.
Ian Lathwood (46) set a New Zealand masters M45 100m record of 11.47 +1.0. He also secured a personal best 200m of 23.43 -1.2.
