ACA Southland Centennial Shield Relays

The Whippets Running Project burst on to the winter racing season in emphatic style winning both the senior men and senior women’s relays as well as taking the women’s handicap honours.
The men’s 5 x 3km around the College’s playing fields was a close affair throughout between last year’s winners Pakuranga and the Whippets. Mountain running bronze medallist Toby Batchelor led Pakuranga through the first lap ahead of Whippets Ben Hamilton. Jack Paine eased past Ben Gatting to put Whippets in front handing over to Ronan Lee. National junior 3000m and 5000m champion Christian De Vaal chased hard, and with a time of 9:28, on the third leg pegged back Lee. Trent Thorpe in 9:32 maintained Pakuranga’s lead over Darian Sorouri heading into the final 3km leg. Will Little wound it up for the Whippets on the final circuit and with the fastest individual time of 9:19 headed in Pakuranga’s Fionn Cullinane, who ran 9:33, by nine seconds in 47:47.
Whippets B team were third in 50:28, followed in by host Club Auckland City Athletics 50:50 and Takapuna 51:35. Lynndale number three team won the senior men’s handicap.
The Whippets Off the Leash team of Sophie Williamson, Skye Dick, Amy Shaw, Jaye Atkin and Amelia Lythe won the women’s relay in 61:09 from Oratia 63:44 and TTT 64:41. Whippets Chasing Tails team won on handicap.
Amber Cook of Glen Eden ran the fastest lap in 11:47, Stella Hammond clocked 11:48 and Sophie Williamson 11:54.
TTT teams were first and second in the master women 3 x 3km relay. The number one team were clear winners in 40:51, from number two 47:15 and Oratia 47:29. Pakuranga were first on handicap. Tamara Clarke of Oratia was the fastest in 12:34, Codie Fourie ran 13:16 and Rachel Eade 13:21.
Owairaka won by three minutes over Pakuranga in the master men 4 x 3km relay in 42:31. Pakuranga B team were third and Glen Eden Meteors won on handicap. Fastest times to Jacob Hendrickx 10:21, Wim Luijpers 10:22 and Nick Moore 10:27.
Race Walking Auckland Gold team won the race walking 2 x 3km relay in 43:42 with the Race Walking Premier team winning on handicap. Richie Trathen was the fastest in 17:04.
Pakuranga won the mixed junior under 16 4 x 2km relay in 28:33 from Auckland City Athletics 28:58 and TTT 32:07. Oratia Black team won the junior handicap. Fastest boy Quinn Moss 6:25 and Ben Oxford 6:27, fastest girl Imogen Barlow 7:19 and Denika Clooney 7:42.
