NATIONAL RESULTS FROM ANZ WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
AUCKLAND
New Zealand Track and Field Championships, Douglas Track and Field, Trusts Arena, Henderson – 5/8 March 2026
Sam Ruthe brought the curtain down on one of the best evenings of athletics seen in New Zealand for some time with a fantastic display of middle distance running. He led throughout the 1500m winning by over six seconds in 3:41.43.
This is the fastest time for the national title since Robbie Johnston won in in 1992 in 3:41.21. John Walker holds the championship record of 3:38.17.
Ruthe said he would have loved to have raced Sam Tanner, who is out with an Achilles injury.
“It’s always great fun racing Tanner, but he’s got his sights set on the Comm Games, so it’s a bit of a smart move by him not racing today, but it was still great coming out in front of this crowd.
“I’ve never been in a crowd this big in New Zealand so it’s the first time I’ve experienced a race like that in New Zealand which is so fun.
Tiaan Whelpton responded to the packed grandstand with a scintillating clear victory in the 100m.
“The crowd was awesome. I love the initiative of ‘Track Stars’ and I look forward to it being repeated next year.
“It felt like I was in Europe at a major meeting,” he said.
While pleased with his fourth straight 100m title, he was hoping for a quicker time.
“10.24 is not as fast as I would have liked to go, but it was pretty challenging into head winds on the home straight. I wish we could have gone down the back straight and maybe we would have seen something a little quicker.
“But given the conditions I’m pretty happy with what I got,” he added.
Zoe Hobbs, on the eve of flying out to the world indoor championships in Poland, won her tenth straight women’s 100m title and 13th overall adding her three 200m titles won between 2017 and 2020.
However Hobbs was disappointed with her time.
“I really thought we were going to get a tail wind tonight and able to capitalise on some great conditions with a great crowd.
“But unfortunately it wasn’t and we faced a head wind so the time wasn’t too flash. I was looking for another sub 11 seconds time as I feel I’m in the best shape of my life.”
Hobbs also praised the crowd.
“The crowd was amazing and I felt the energy when I ran past in warm up. It was great to see it sold out and really cool to be at a home event.”
Later in the evening Hobbs competed in the celebrity mixed handicap 100m. Starting from scratch she whistled through the others to win by 20 metres in 11.38 with a slight head wind of -0.2.
Hamish Kerr cleared the bar at 2.28m for his tenth high jump title. He missed his three attempts at 2.32m which would have given him the championship record which is held by Glenn Howard at 2.30m in 2000.
Kerr was pleased with his result.
“It’s up there in terms of my best right now I’ve ever had, and I still in the middle of pretty heavy training block and there is still a lot of stuff to come and we were hoping that there would be a little bit of evidence of some nice things happening in the jump and I think we definitely saw that.”
Tom Walsh collected his 15th gold medal in the shot put, taking his number of national titles to 16, with the discus title in 2013.
Walsh was moderately happy with his winning throw of 21.10m, 46cm further than 2023 and 2024 champion Jacko Gill.
“It was a great night tonight with the crowd and stuff like that. I’m not overly happy with the performance, but we’re heading in the right direction and things are starting to come right.
“Two weeks to world indoors and I know how fast things can click and so I’ve got to keep trusting and keep going.”
“The main goal was to get back ready for the Commonwealth Games in July and the Diamond League final in September,” he said.
Lex Revell-Lewis set a New Zealand resident 400m record of 45.97 breaking Shaun Farrell’s 46.09 set at the 1998 national championships in Whanganui. It was four years in a row for Revell-Lewis in the 400m. Revell-Lewis holds the national 400m record of 45.88.
Eliza McCartney won her seventh national pole vault title in a championship record of 4.81m, a centimetre better than her 2016 title height.
After taking three silver and three bronze medals at the hammer throw since 2017, Todd Bates finally struck gold with a throw of 53.31m.
Toby Gualter claimed the gold in the 5000m in a tick under 14 minutes, heading in three times 5000m champion Hayden Wilde and 2024 champion William Little.
Fernanda Tirado set a New Zealand under 18 hammer throw record of 64.43m bettering her pending record of 63.70m from Melbourne in January and Lauren Bruce’s previous record of 63.67m set at the secondary schools championship in Whanganui in 2014.
Tommy Te Puni won his first senior 200m title. It was title number five for James Preston in the 800m. Toby Tasker repeated his win in 2024 in the 3000m steeplechase.
Jonah Cropp took out the race walking double over 3000m and 10,000m both in personal best times. Connor Bell collected his sixth discus title as did James Steyn with his sixth title in the pole vault.
Brooke Somerfield won the 200m title, Madeleine Waddell retained her 400m title, Rosa Twyford won the 800m, 1500m double, the last time this was achieved was by Katherine Camp in 2019. Laura Nagel took her total overall of national titles to 17 in winning the 5000m for the fifth time.
Eva Pringle steeplechased to her third straight title, Laura Langley won the 10,000m race walk for the fourth time to now give her a total overall of 13 national titles, Maddison-Lee Wesche had the shot out for her seventh title, Tatiana Kaumoana made it four years in a row in the discus, Lauren Bruce number five in the hammer and Tori Moorby ten in the javelin. Imogen Skelton won the high jump for the third year in a row. It took a PB javelin throw of 73.82m for 2020 champion Alex Wood to unseat the senior champion for the last three years Douw Botes.
Eden Moyle was in great form in the under 18 women, winning the sprint treble, (the 400m in a PB 56.03), as well as a member of the winning Auckland team in both relays.
