World Athletics Continental Tour - Auckland
New Zealand’s 2nd Continental Tour Meeting will take place in Auckland this weekend, The Sir Graeme Douglas Memorial Track Meeting, named after the major sponsor Douglas Pharmaceuticals.
Zoe Hobbs returns to the track where she ran 11.35, NZ Residents record in 2020, as well as a win at last years Sir Graeme Douglas in 11.38 (+3.2). Over her preferred distance of 100m, she will be looking to cement her place even further up the Rankings for Tokyo. Eddie Nketia, currently ranked 46th in the Road to Tokyo standings, will be looking to continue to move up the rankings, whilst Tiaan Whelpton is looking to move himself well up the rankings after a break out season so far. Hopefully good wins are provided for the sprinters and some fast times. If last years meet is anything to go by, there are strong winds available with Rohan Browning running 10.08 with a positive 6.7 m/s wind in the heats before Eddie Nketia took out the final in 10.19 with a positive 2.2 m/s.
Sarah Cowley-Ross will take a break from the microphone and will line up in the Women’s Triple Jump and take on Anna Thompson. The Women’s Shot Put will be headlined by Dame Valerie Adams who is looking to continue her winning streak this year against Maddison Wesche.
Olivia McTaggart and Imogen Ayris are two athletes who are looking for all important ranking points in their quest to make the top 32 in the Pole Vault. The best way they can do that would be with some big jumps on Saturday, and both are capable are having both recorded PBs this season.
The Men’s Shot Put, once again sees two of the World’s best in Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill. Both Men are capable of winning titles on the World stage, and the New Zealand public has been grateful to see the two of them compete together this summer.
Cameron French is down for the flat 400m, the 400m Hurdles National Record holder, will face newly turned 400m runner Hamish Gill, and hopefully a fast time for both Men is the reward. In the Men’s 2 lap race, it will be James Preston and Alex Beddoes rematch after a great race at the Porritt Classic.
Hamish Kerr, fresh off his National Record in Wellington last weekend of 2.31, will be looking at the Olympic Qualifier of 2.33m, which currently only 12 Men have.
