Athletics Auckland Weekly Review - 15th February 2021

Porritt Classic – Oceania Area Permit

Auckland athletes were out in full force at the Porritt Classic in Hamilton on Saturday. Portia Bing (Waitakere) showed she is finding some form leading into the Nationals with a time of  55.99. This is a new Athletics New Zealand Resident Record and a Meet Record. Her National Record of 55.86 set in 2019 in Sydney is in close grasp.

Zoe Hobbs (North Harbour Bays) was outstanding in the 100m winning in 11.39 (w -0.1). This was also Meet Record. Symone Tufunai (North Harbour Bays) was second in 11.84. Edward Osei-Nketia (North Harbour Bays) made his way to the top of the podium in the Men’s 100m with a 10.28 (w +0.1). Mogammad Smith (Waitakere) was third with 10.79,

Isabel Neal (North Harbour Bays) shocked the crowd and the live stream by winning the Women’s 400m from lane 8. Her winning time was 54.61. The 19-year-old elevated herself to number one on the 2021 New Zealand rankings. Hamish Gill (North Harbour Bays) stepped up to the Men’s 400m and produced a 47.72 for the win. This takes him to the top of the NZ annual list for 2021 and this showed that there is definitely more potential for Hamish over the longer distance.

Chloe Browne (ACA) won a very tactical Women’s 1500m B race, in 4.34.71.

In the Hurdles, Taila van Rooyen (North Harbour Bays) won the 80m Hurdles in a time of 12.35 (w -0.5), Angelina Zickert (North Harbour Bays) won the U20 Women 100m Hurdles) in 16.20 (w -1.6), from Ava Duggan (Pakuranga) with 16.59. Ben Ward was third in the U16 Men 100m Hurdles with 11.73 (w -2.4). Auckland atheltes took the clean sweep in the U18 110m Hurdles with Joesph Dunn (Papakura) winning with 15.39 (w -1.1), seocnd was Thomas Wynne (Pakuranga) with 15.85, and third was Liam McKenzie (Pakuranga) with 16.20.

The Open Women’s 100m Hurdles didn’t disappoint with Amy Robertson (North Harbour Bays) winning convenicly in a time of 13.80 (w -0.7). In the Open Men’s 110m Hurdles, Joshua Hawkins (ACA) was an easy winner with 14.28 (w -2.0) from Tom Moloney (ACA) 15.37 and Justin Menezes (Pakuranga) 17.59.

Sophie Atkinson (ACA) was second in the Women’s 800m with a 2:12.80. In the Men’s 800m, Former Wesley Athlete, Alex Beddoes (Cook Islands) was second with a new Cook Island National Record which now stands at 1:47.85.  James Harding (Papakura) booked his ticket to Kenya for the U20 World Championships with a time of 1:49.18 for third just 0.20 shy of Nick Willis’ National U18 record.

In the Women’s 200m, Georgia Hulls (North Harbour Bays) continues to improve taking another win with a time of 23.78 (w -0.2) which was also a Meet Record. Second was Zoe Hobbs with 23.89 and third was Natasha Eady (North Harbour Bays) with 23.94. In the Men’s 200m, Edward Osei-Nketia won with 21.46 (w -0.9) with Tommy Te Puni (North Harbour Bays) second in 21.59.

In the High Jump, Tom Moloney took the win with 1.99m. He attempted 2.03m with three misses. Josh Inger (North Harbour Bays) was second with 1.95m. Imogen Skelton (ACA) finished first in a three way tie in the Women’s High Jump with 1.73m.

Savannah Scheen (North Harbour Bays) won the Women’s Discus with 53.10m with Kaia Tupu-South (North Harbour Bays) second with 49.21m and third was Natalia Rankin-Chitar (Papatoetoe) with a throw of 46.64m. In the Men’s Discus, Alexander Parkinson took the win with 56.09m.

In one of the most exciting events of the day, Briana Stephenson (North Harbour Bays) won the Women’s Long Jump on a countback with 5.77m (w +0.0) in round 5. Zoe Taylor (Waitakere) was third with 5.61m (w +0.4)

Stephanie Wrathall (North Harbour Bays) was second in the Women’s Javelin with 50.72m with Brianna Tirado (North Harbour Bays) third with 45.86m.

Dame Valerie Adams (Pakuranga) was out to a Season’s Best with 18.68m in Round 5. Maddison-Lee Wesche (Waitakere) was seocnd with 17.43m and Kaia Tupu-South third 15.37m. Dame Valerie said “It was very consistent,” explained Adams. “The dots are slowly connecting. I’m very happy with today’s performance, but there’s so much more there. I’m going to take faith from the performance.”

The Men’s Shot Put continues to excite not only New Zealand, but the World with Jacko Gill (Takapuna) going head to head with Tom Walsh. Jacko got the shot out to 21.52m which is the exact same distance that Jacko threw in Christchurch to equal his PB and Auckland Record. Tom threw 21.45m.

Nicole Bradley (North Harbour Bays) got the 4kg Hammer out to 60.54m for third, while in the Triple Jump, Diana Ismagilova (North Harbour Bays) was second with 11.78m (w +0.4)

Para Events

Anna Steven (North Harbour Bays)took the win in the Women’s 100m with a time of 14.32 giving her a percentage of 88.47%. Paddy Walsh (North Harbour Bays) was second with 15.61 (85.10%) and Sionann Murphy (Takapuna) was third with 16.57 (79.06%). In the Men’s 100m Joe Smith (North Harbour Bays) took the win with 12.51 (91.29%).

Unfortunately, the wind gauge didn’t operate for this event.

In the 200m, Anna Steven was second with 29.74 (w -0.1) with Paddy Walsh 3rd in a time of 34.48 (75.75%). In the Men’s 200m Mitch Joynt (North Harbour Bays) won with 23.91 (88.96%) (w -0.2), second was Joe Smith 25.80 (87.56%) and third was Zachary Orbell (North Harbour Bays) with 33.72.

Sionann Murphy won the Women’s Shot Put (3kg) , with 7.92m (51.09%). Ben Tuimaseve (Papakura) won the Men’s Shot Put with 12.65m (77.20%), which is a new Open Auckland Para Record.
