World Athletics Continental Tour – Sir Graeme Douglas International – Auckland
The World Athletics Continental Tour continued on Saturday 27th February at Trusts Arena, Auckland. The meet is one of 31 Bronze Tour Meets in the World in 2021.
Edward Osei- Nketia took full advantage to win the Men’s 100m with a time of 10.46 (w +3.2), from Joseph Miller and Tommy Te Puni. Hamish Gill won the Men’s 400m with a time of 47.68. Cameron French crossed the line in second, however was subsequently disqualified for running on the line around the top bend. Flynn Marshall was promoted to 2nd with Luke Mercieca in 3rd.
Two races were required for the Men’s 800m with James Preston winning with a time of 1:47.92, with Alex Beddoes (COK) coming in second with Dominic Delvin getting third. The favourite for the Men’s 100m, Joshua Hawkins, was disqualified for a false start. Tom Moloney won in a time of 15.25 (w +0.5).
In the High Jump, the National Record holder Hamish Kerr raised the bar to 2.33m (which is the Olympic Qualifying height). Unfortunately he missed all three attempts. He won the competition with 2.28m. Ettiene Du Preez won the Men’s Pole Vault in tricky wind conditions with 4.62m. Felix McDonald won the Long Jump with 7.33m.
The highlight event of the night lived up to expectations with Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill going head to head. After a great battle Tom took the lead and managed to hold on to take his first win of 2021 beating Jacko by 16cm. Tom’s winning throw was 21.60m with Jacko getting out to 21.44m.
Heats were required for the Women’s 100m. Zoe Hobbs won the final with a time of 11.45 (w +0.3) with Georgia Hulls coming in second with 11.64. A blanket could of been thrown over the rest of the field with Brooke Somerfield in third with 11.84 and Symone Tafuna’i fourth with 11.88.
Jordyn Blake was a convincing winner in the Women’s 400m from Holly Rule and Brooke Cull. Camille Buscomb won the Women’s 1500m with 4:15.25 from a fast finishing Katherine Camp and Rebekah Greene. Amy Robertson continued her dominance over the hurdles with a winning time of 13.58 (w +0.8)
In the field, Imogen Ayris won the Women’s Pole Vault with 4.32m from Hannah Philpott second with 3.62m. Both Oliva McTaggart and Lillian Bing recorded no measurement. Anna Thomson added to her wins in 2021 with a a performance of 12.71m in the Triple Jump. She won from Diana Ismagilova and Sarah Cowley-Ross. Sarah then joined the commentary team for the remainder of the evening.
Dame Valerie Adams showed she is back with an outstanding throw of 19.65m. Maddison-Lee Wesche was second and Kaia Tupu-South third. Tori Peters got the Javelin out to 54.47m.
The Tour continues on the 11th March with the Canberra Track Classic at the AIS Athletics Track, followed by the Sydney Track Classic on the 13th March at Sydney Olympic Park.

Only minutes after the conclusion of the World Athletics Continental Tour Meet, the New Zealand Government ordered a seven day lockdown for Auckland starting on Sunday morning at 6.00am. The 2021 Jennian Homes New Zealand Track & Field Championships that were due to start on Friday have been postponed. Athletics New Zealand are continuing to work on possibilities and will advise the membership in the following days.
