McKinnon Shield Pre-season and Auckland 10,000m championship, Mt Smart Stadium – 14 October 2023
Jack Paine paced Jamie Mora for most of the 10,000m championship, almost half a lap behind fleet footed Michael Sutton who shot to the lead from the start. Sutton was eventually overhauled three laps from the finish, giving Paine the opportunity to carry on to win in a PB 31:23.81. Mora (17) also scored a personal best of 31:27.19 and Sutton cut a considerable amount off his previous best finishing third in 31:32.36. Azrael Cabusao (18) clocked 32:46.14 PB, Charles Buchanan (19) recorded 33:09.69 PB and Louie Endres (17) 33:12.24 PB.
Mora who will be taking up an American scholarship next year was pleased to secure a qualifying time for next year’s under 20 world cross country championships.
“The aim was to get the world standard and make it feel as comfortable as possible, it was an awesome race. It was a bit of tit for tat with Jack, he paced me and I have to repay him and pace him in a couple of weeks.
“I’m really grateful to him,” he said.
Mora is going to the University of Missouri along with Louie Endres next August.
Cayd Lambert won the 70m in 8.12 and thje 150m in 16.63. James Trathen collected the 300m in 37.27 in a close race with Remy Syminton and Alexander Wilkins clocked in at 3:17.96 in the 1200m.
Samantha Lathwood won the 70m in 9.29, Mia De Jager was the fastest over 150m in 18.61, also HJ 1.65m, and Sophie Hancock took out the 300m in 41.00 from Esme Reid 41.52. Imogen Barlow battled the strong head wind on the back straight to finish a clear winner of the 1200m in 3:39.59.
